Bentley is expanding the Bentayga range with the Bentayga V8. Currently, the ultra-luxury SUV came only with a twin-turbo W12, and outside the US, with a twin-turbo diesel V8. The new gas-powered twin-turbo V8 might give up four cylinders versus the W12, but performance isn’t at all lacking — 0-60 comes in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 180 MPH. Optional equipment includes massive carbon-ceramic brakes, the front set being the biggest available on a production car. Expect the “entry level” Bentayga to arrive in the US sometime in late 2018.
Since its introduction, the Bentley Bentayga has been at the forefront of the luxury SUV market, offering “the ultimate Grand Touring experience”. That experience is now available in a performance-enhanced new model, the Bentayga V8.
Everything rests on Bentley’s next-generation 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, which manages to combine ferocious power with remarkable fuel efficiency. This sportier vibe is further enhanced by a characteristic V8 burble, stylish twin-quad exhaust pipes and optional carbon-ceramic brakes.
The results are staggering: this is an engine that develops 542 bhp (550 PS) and 568 lb.ft. (770 Nm) of torque, resulting in a top speed of 290 kph and 100 kph in 4.5 seconds.
And yet somehow this beast of a V8 has a range of 746 km, with CO2 emissions of just 260 g/km. This is achievable thanks to the engine being able to deactivate four of its eight cylinders in suitable conditions, without compromising the drive. The seamless change happens in just 20 milliseconds, making it imperceptible to customers.
The addition of Stop-Start technology, which can activate at ‘near-to-stop’ speeds, also contributes to the emissions figure.
The other trick Bentley has had to perform is to ally this power with the luxury, limousine-like refinement that you’d expect from the British marque. And this has been achieved through Bentley’s Drive Dynamics system.
Design for life
The exterior design of the Bentayga V8 reflects the model’s sporting position within the Bentayga family.
The shape is defined by the Bentayga’s unique muscular, sculptural lines, balancing athleticism with an unmistakable presence on the road. From the four round LED headlamps to the large matrix grille, the Bentayga V8 exudes the Bentley design DNA, while the overt powerline, large rear haunches and raised ride height reflect the rugged off-road ability of the luxury SUV.
For the first time, optional carbon-ceramic brakes are offered on the Bentayga. The braking system is the most powerful ever fitted to a Bentley, providing a maximum braking torque of 6,000 Nm.
In front of these sit a choice of 11 wheel designs, including an all-new 22” five-spoke wheel with black painted and polished finish.
A resolute black and chrome grille at the front and ‘twin-quad’ exhaust tailpipes at the rear, are stylish bookends to a remarkable piece of engineering.
The Bentayga V8 fuses intricate detailing with handcrafted precision. Customers can specify hand cross-stitching, and there is the choice of the Bentayga’s four-, five-, or seven-seat configuration, for added versatility.
Three new interior options are on offer: a high-gloss carbon-fiber finish; a wood and hide steering wheel; and a new rich red leather, Cricket Ball, with its instantly appealing deep chestnut hue of a new cricket ball.
Unrestrained on the outside
The Bentley Dynamic Ride is the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilizes a 48V system. This ensures cabin stability, ride comfort, and exceptional handling.
It offers up to eight modes of on- and off-road drive settings, allowing drivers to select the perfect set-up for any surface. There is also multi-mode air suspension and Hill Descent Control which automatically regulates the vehicle’s speed on steep declines.
Adaptive Cruise Control and Traffic Assist enables the driver to maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front, while in urban environments, there are a number of driver aids, including Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, and Top View, a system which uses four cameras to display an overall picture of the vehicle’s surroundings. Other innovative systems available include Night Vision, which uses infra-red to identify potential obstacles.
Finally, the touchscreen infotainment system boasts class-leading navigation technology, while rear seat passengers benefit from the introduction of the Bentley Entertainment Tablet – a removable 10.2” Android device with 4G, WiFi, and Bluetooth for high-speed onboard connectivity.
