That’s right. Just like the three ZR1’s that preceded him, this is the fastest Corvette of the moment. And when you consider that the basic version already delivers 466 hp and almost 300 km / h, that means something. The new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is not only ‘a bit faster’. He is a point on the horizon.
Not really. In the US you buy a ZR1 with all options for just over 120,000 euros. For that you get 765 hp, a top of 341 km / h, you go from 0 to 96 km / h in 2.85 seconds and from 0 to 161 km / h in six seconds. These are pretty much the same numbers as the McLaren 720S – but it’s twice as expensive.
HE’S PROBABLY NOT GOING AS GOOD ABOUT THE CORNER AS THOSE MCLAREN …
Ha, make no mistake. The ZR1 is not just a straight-forward rocket. The proof: when Chevrolet drove a test round at the Virginia International Raceway with a late pre-production model, they improved the lap time of the new Ford GT by more than one second. And that is possibly the car with the best handling of this moment.
WHERE DO ALL THOSE PERFORMANCES COME FROM?
The new LT5 V8 has, compared to the meager LT4 of the Z06 (659 hp), double injectors and a 50 percent larger supercharger. From 4,000 rpm, he has more power to offer bins. If you agree, then he shoots blue flames from his exhausts.
HOW DOES THE NEW CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1 ACT ON THE TRACK?
Well, the aerodynamics is inspired by the C7.R race car – that’s all there is to say. With the ZTK option, you get a huge, adjustable rear spoiler that provides up to 430 kg of downforce. You need this, because the ZR1 is a bit like a jet fighter: if you want to get the most out of it, you can use all the help – digital and analogue. Incidentally, the car – with its thirteen radiators – never shows a sign of overheating, as happened with the Z06.
AND ON THE ROAD?
Comfortable, flexible and easy. The couple provides relaxation and you can stop the exhaust. But if you have the space and make sure that the Michelin Cup 2’s are on temperature, then you are suddenly in one of the fastest and most extreme attractions of the moment. The carbon-ceramic discs are almost comically large: from their top speed they shut them down within eight seconds. The engine and brakes are the biggest difference with other C7s; the road behavior is in fact comparable.
DO I HAVE TO BUY ONE?
Unfortunately, that is not possible. As with the Camaro ZL1 1LE , the aero interventions ensure that the ZR1 does not meet European pedestrian requirements. So the question is: do you have to move for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1? We would seriously think about it.
